Finally, contract has been signed and work is well underway and by the end of summer my book entitled "Waves in Attenuating Media with Power-Law Characteristics" should be ready. The book will be issued in the ASA Press (Acoustical Society of America) series of Springer.
The first 20 pages including the table of contents and the introductory chapter can be downloaded here.
The introduction covers Emmy Noether's connection between symmetries and conservation laws as well as Hooke's law (1660). Then Newtonian viscosity as expressed in his Principia from 1687 is introduced as well as its generalization to fractional viscosity. That's one of the main origins of power laws. Another source is fractal geometry as illustrated by the vascular tree of the kidney.
